The .SE country-specific top-level domain extension was established in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its introduction, the registration procedure was quite restrictive, so a very limited number of domain names were secured. Persons were permitted to register no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a requirement, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, businesses and organizations could acquire a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened a lot and, consequently, the number of dot SE domains has been growing each year.
